By 64squar.. on 29 January 2008 @ 05:46PM

I wonder which country is best at chess?

Embedding Games

By 64squar.. on 25 January 2008 @ 10:46AM

One of the biggest new features is embedding games into blogs. The embedding feature is very easy to use. Simply inserting the following code into your article:
sixty4_embed("id=game.4")
... embeds the game into the page …. :

There’s lots of different options. E.g.
sixty4_embed("id=game.4,size=5,move_num=4")

There’s lots more options and we’re putting together a page explaining them all.

Welcome to our new blog!!

By 64squar.. on 10 January 2008 @ 07:49PM

Well it’s been a long time since the last update, but we’ve been busily rejigging the whole site with a wealth of new features.
First up, now every user now has their own blog. It’s all completely free-form and you talk can about anything chess related. Write about interesting games that you’ve played or your thoughts about strategy.
This is the new blog for the whole site, dealing with mostly general news. For a more technical viewpoint on 64squar.es, visit
Jonah’s blog
Another big feature is embedding games. Games can be embedded on articles and blogs. In the future, it will be possible to embed them on external websites. The embedding feature is pretty cool – there’s lots of options. We’ll put up a separate post explaining it, but here’s a sample :

Also we’ve put together a small CMS for allowing for static pages – which will allow for more pages (e.g. FAQ).

Blog is back..

By 64squar.. on 23 October 2007 @ 12:04PM

Well the blog’s been down for a while – and we’re finally back for good !
In the past month we’ve actually had quite a few features added :
  1. Caching: The site should load up significantly faster.
  2. Openings: Games are now classified into openings. There is also a database of openings that can be browsed.
  3. Open challenges: Users can now create challenges that are open for anyone to accept. This makes it much easier to create games that get accepted quickly.
  4. Lobby: We now have a lobby where people can chat publicly and find other players
  5. PGN: The Portable Game Notation for the game is now available for download, making it much easier to export the games into other chess programs and systems.
  6. Various small fixes and improvements.

RSS Activity Feed

By 64squar.. on 15 September 2007 @ 12:03PM

There’s now an RSS feed for each user :-)
You can also see this on your home page as an activity list. Should help to see what happened when and makes it more obvious when users win or lose.
Next up – users preferences and adding notes to games :-)
